Henk van Mierlo

This article appeared in the magazine of the Dutch Film Days in Utrecht, where a Retrospect focused on his entire film oeuvre.

After HAVO, Henk van Mierlo studied at the Royal Academy of Art in 's-Hertogenbosch and then at the Artibus Academy in Utrecht, where he graduated cum laude as a designer specializing in photography and film. After working for several years as an art director at leading Dutch advertising agencies, he started a Creative Design studio in Enschede with Createam bv serving Dutch industries (Albert Heijn, Auping, Hunkemöller, Mac Donalds, Philips, Vroom and Dreesmann etc.) designs were made for corporate and theme campaigns, packaging and house styles, among others. He moved to Ootmarsum and started there under his own name a company that produced publicity campaigns & audio-visual productions. From then on, the film division within his company grew faster than expected and it was decided to split up the company; audiovisual productions and advertising. Publicis, one of the major Dutch advertising agencies, took a participation in Henk van Mierlo Reclame. In that period he followed marketing & communication courses, to better serve his relations. For Wisse Dekker, former chairman of the board of directors of Philips, he produced and directed a large Corporate Film with accompanying print campaign Philips Expertise Worldwide. This 35 mm film has achieved worldwide success and has received several international awards. (read Wisse Dekker about this). A production for KLM: Royal Teamwork, received 6 gold awards in various countries. A KLM production previously made by Van Mierlo: First in the Air, was viewed by 25 million people, a KLM study later found. A composite commercial from that film received the Public Award in the Netherlands at the STER for the best commercial of that year, the Golden Loekie.
Hundreds of films were produced by van Mierlo and in most cases also directed for a large number of national and international relations. An impressive list of 164 international awards, including 41 Gold Awards and 4 x Grand Prix (best of festival) in Amsterdam, Biaritz, Chicago, Sydney, Rotterdam, Leeuwarden, London, Rome, New York, Zurich, Los Angeles and Vienna, underlines the quality he knows to bring into his productions. Preferably, all films are produced digitally in Full HD, or on 35mm and most of the music is specially composed. Henk van Mierlo received the BUMA STEMRA Award for the most impressive use of composed music in film. The same quality applies to his design qualities: Van Mierlo designs large and small campaigns for large and small industries. Campaigns, purposefully and effectively visualized with intelligent headings and relevant body copy. He is also a talented designer in the field of packaging. For example, he designed many of the packaging for Albert Heijn's own house brand, including the entire dairy range. He designed and built large exhibition stands in Japan, France, England and the USA and designed corporate identities for dozens of companies. Most of the photography for the campaigns was mostly photographed by himself. Van Mierlo received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Chicago's International Film and Television Festival, which was presented only 4 times before. her appreciation for his total work. He lived and worked in Oss, Eindhoven, Enschede, Amsterdam, Ootmarsum, The Hague, Muiden, Bussum, Sloten (Fr), iDeventer and nowadays in Voorburg near The Hague.


In the Netherlands he is among the top. Quality of communication is of paramount importance!
